Weetabix Diet – Will It Work ?

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

So can you lose weight with the weetabix diet ?

Weetabix diet

Weetabix diet

As we start a new year, many of us are looking for one diet or another to help us lose weight. Just over a year ago, I was in that same position.    With over 4 stone ( 56lbs) to lose, my situation was a little different than someone who felt they had put on a few extra pounds over the Christmas  holidays and needed to get back in shape. If you need to lose weight and keep it off, my opinion is the weetabix diet is not going to help you long term. Would I have been able to stick on the weetabix diet for the time it took me to lose 56lbs ?  No chance. I lost that weight by still enjoying the foods I love, no way would I want to be eating weetabix every day. If you love weetabix, then go ahead and eat them, but if your looking for a weight loss solution, I don’t think weetabix will the be the answer.

Baked Bean Diet For Weight Loss ?

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Were  snowed in today, and as my son Joe  has a snow day from School I made a quick video with his help  to talk about the baked beans diet.   Essex mechanic Neil King lost weight on a baked beans-only diet, but is it  viable for long term weight loss ? I don’t know about you, but no way could I have done what Neil did.  I lost 4 stone Neil lost 10 stone, so credit to him, but long term, I think I will stick with what has worked for me.

Intermittent Fasting Stubborn Fat

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

With my original weight loss target reached last month My next focus will be to try and shift  the stubborn fat the remains. My 2010 goal will be that elusive holy grail of the 6 pack and I know that Intermittent Fasting is the perfect tool to use to get rid of that stubborn fat. I am looking at some new bodyweight exercise plans for the new year, but for the next few weeks, will just continue with what has produced such successful results through 2009.

Intermittent Fasting Week 36 It’s Yo Yo Time.

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

Intermittent Fasting Week 36 , oh boy is this last 10 lbs or so proving hard to move. This week, according to the scales I have once again put back the 2lb lost the previous week. When I look in the mirror, if anything I think I look leaner. It was a bank holiday weekend here last weekend, it was also my wedding anniversary, so , yes I did indulge, but I also added in one extra fast during the week to compensate it. One of the great things with Intermittent Fasting is you are more aware of what you have consumed, after all, if you fasted, you didn’t eat anything, so not exactly hard to keep a track if it. !

In addition to the extra fasting day I also did my usual 5 mile walk every day, I do the walking because I enjoy it, not because I want to burn calories, but  it does burn at least 500 calories  ( depending on which website guide you use ) So with the fasting and the exercise ,what I know is that I have not eaten  an extra 7000 calories above my maintence level, so I am going to assume this is more about fluid retention, and perhaps some muscle gain , than an increase in body fat.  My belt is always a good indicator, and I am not having to loosen it a notch.

I know we are told not to go by the scales too much, but the fact is , we do, and even though I am sitting here writing that I am ok with it, I am still disappointed when the scales show I gained weight.

On the bodyweight exercises, I am getting stronger, I can do 7 pull ups on my first set. A month ago I could not do a single pull up without assistance, so I am very pleased with myself on this. Of course, yesterday I tried to get ahead of myself, and after posting about the Bar Barians the other day , I tried to do my first muscle up, let’s just say I need to walk before I can run.  They make it look so easy, but trust me , it isn’t ;)   I could not do one. I know there is a technique involved too, but no way am I strong enough, but I have set a goal to do it before the end of the year.

I think Jaz in this video below is safe from me showing him up on Bondi Beach for a while yet !

Bar-Barians Elite Bodyweight Specialists

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

I have spent far too long today looking at these guys website I had read a post on Rusty Moore’s blog all about the Bar- Barians and The Bar-Barian Ranking System .

Bar-Baron Requirements

“As far as the physical goes, anyone at any level is eligible to train with the us, but you must meet the prerequisites to be bestowed the title of the Bar-barians Bar-baron. Even Bill Gates could not wear the title of Bar-barian. It is something that cannot be bought or easily attained. Only through hardwork and dedication can one become a real Bar-barian. Physical requirments include:
1) 40 Dips
2) 20 Pull Ups
3) 50 Push Ups
4) 5 Muscle Ups
All of these done in 6 minutes or less”

Now as a guy who started this year 56lbs overweight, it won’t  be a big surprise I am not entering yet .

Now I can only dream of doing half the bodyweight exercises they do with a pull up bar, but I do have a new goal !.

The Bar-Barians were founded in 2004 and are based out of Brooklyn, New York.

I have included a video below of  Zeph who is one of the co founders of the Bar Barians, doing his thing, but you should check out their blog too  here they also have an active forum

These guys are in amazing shape, proof that you don’t need to go to a gym to get in shape. My tip is simple. Use Intermittent Fasting to lose body fat, and do bodyweight exercises to maintain muscle, maybe you will be the next Bar- Barian ?

You Can’t Out Train A Bad Diet

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you will know I am not big on doing lots of training. I am not a member of a gym,  I prefer body weight exercises and some walking.   I am not a fan of exercising to lose weight, I am firmly in the camp of the best results for weight loss come from your diet, in my case using  flexible intermittent fasting.

I was going to do a long post about Diet v Exercise, but I found some videos from Craig Ballantyne and Brad Pilon that bring the message home far better than I can.  Watch the video below to see what I mean

This video  just goes to show you, in diet vs. exercise, you can never out train a bad diet. It doesn’t matter how good your exercise program is, if this is your nutrition, you’re not going to lose body fat.  Just to make it clear, I am not anti exercise, If you like to run, then run, my point is if you are eating too many calories, exercise won’t save you.

Intermittent Fasting Week 34

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Oh dear ,  just did my weigh in for this week and I am showing that last weeks loss of 2lbs has been reversed. I am back at 186lbs, a 2lb weight gain. Though I don’t feel I have gained, My clothes are not tighter and I have not moved up a notch on the belt.I have to face the facts I have.  I had a bit more of a social week this week, and for me social = alcohol.

No doubt the extra calories this week are from a larger number of beers than normal, I worked out that this social blow out contributed an extra 2500 calories to my weeks total.I still did 2 days of intermittent fasting this week , but this does show you that you use intermittent fasting and still gain weight.

This is the first time this year for me I have gained weight while fasting, the only other time I have gained weight was during a break from intermittent fasting , as I had reached a plateau.  So the plan for this week is to take more care on the the calorie intake. I still did my body weight exercises as normal, plus I went on a couple of long walks to take a break from the laptop during my work day, but as Craig Ballantyne is fond of saying, you can’t out train a bad diet, but more on that tomorrow.  We all have good and bad weeks, as a retired dieter, I am not going to be downbeat over one week which is not the normal routine causes me to gain weight.

Intermittent Fasting Success Continues 2 Week Upadte

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

It’s funny , but sometimes you expect the worst, and then are pleasantly surprised. This was  one of those weeks. Last weekend would be best described as a “heavy one ” so even though I had done my 2 intermittent fasting days as per Eat Stop Eat during the week,  I was still hoping at best to have remained the same weight. Stepping on the Nintendo wii digital  scales Saturday morning, I was thrilled to see I had lost 2lbs. In lbs I now weigh 184lbs, which is 13 stone 2lbs or 83.4 kilos.

That 2lb loss puts me at the lowest weight this year, and the goal is ever closer. In a week, when I had more beers than usual, I am thrilled with the results.

Intermittent Fasting Week 31 – Bye Bye Weight Loss Plateau

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

So the first day of a new month, and I just recorded my weight. I also took some new photos of my progress so will look to get them online once i have a little time to create a progress page.

It seems the break from intermittent fasting for 3 weeks has worked , I lost 3lbs this week . This wipes out the weight gain I had during the break. I now weigh 185lbs, or 13 stone 3lbs or around 183.91 kilos. This puts me back at the weight I was on June 19th, but during the month I have lost 2% body fat. Down from 17%  to 15% , this means I have lost fat and added  muscle in the last month.  This is a good example of how sometimes you can’t go by the scales alone. The scales say I am the same as I  was on June 19th, but I was 17% body fat then, so I have actually lost over 3lbs of fat . I can tell by my clothes, but I know how hard it is to dismiss what the scales say !. So what has changed in the last month ?. I altered my bodyweight workouts so they were more demanding. I had realised that I had not changed my body weight exercises  and basically my body had got used to what i was doing and I was not progressing, clearly through the month of July, the new bodyweight workouts  are now making a difference. My new goal this month is now more body fat related than what the scales are telling me. Long term, I want to get to 10% body fat, which if I continue to lose weight, and just maintain muscle means I should be around 176lbs  when I reach that point.  I still am on target to achieve this by the end of the year, hopefully the weight loss plateau is now behind me and the final 10lbs or so will start to fall away.

You Can Drink Beer And Still Lose Weight

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

I like beer, in fact I would have to say I am a bit of a beer geek. I like many different beer styles, Lager, Ale, Stout, Belgian Beers, German Beers, you name it, chances are I like it. I enjoy beer and food matching, I get as much pleasure of pairing a beer style with a food as I would with wine, what many people do not realise is that beer is a better match for many more foods than wine, spicy foods are the most obvious example that most people agree on, but trust me, there are so many more. Nothing pairs better with a chocolate desert than an imperial stout.

I wanted to give hope to other beer lovers out there that , yes it is possible to drink beer and lose weight. I have continued to enjoy drinking beer on a regular basis and I have still lost 20 kilos. There is simply no way I would give up drinking beer.

So let us talk  about the one big myth with beer and weight loss.

Beer does not make you fat. Too many calories make you fat, an average pint of 4% ABV beer is around 200 calories, less than a mars bar and about the same as 100g  ( 4oz ) of fillet steak.  A beer belly, or beer gut is a term we all know, but the truth is there is no such thing as a beer belly, just as there is no such thing as  nacho belly or an ice cream belly. If your stomach is bursting over the top of your trousers, it is because you consume too many calories not because of beer alone… well unless the only calories in your diet  come from about 15 pints of beer a day !

I am not going to tell you that you can drink 10 pints of beer a night and lose weight ( though technically it is possible ) What I will say is you have to understand how many calories you are drinking and budget those into your daily total.

The department of health  give us guidelines of how many alcohol units we should consume per week, ( 3-4 for Men and 2-3 for Women  per day)  if we take their guide, it would be fair to say you could drink about 1 pint of 5% abv lager per day. I don’t want to get into the debate of how many units of alcohol we should or should not have, I just want to highlight the calories. One pint of 5% lager is about 250 calories , one 330ml bottle of 5% lager is about 142 calories , understand the calories in beer, build those calories into you weekly plan, and you can still lose weight while enjoying a few beers.

For more information on calories in beer and the amount of units we are supposed to drink, check out the drink aware website , you can use their alcohol  unit calculator to help you track your consumption.

How To Lose Weight And Still Drink Beer

If you want to lose weight, but don’t want to stop drinking beer, one thing does not change.

You must be in a calorie deficit to lose weight.  You have to look at your current eating and drinking routine and look for a way to reduce the calories. Look at how you drink beer, do you always reach for the salty snacks ?  do you just have the one pint , or does it need to be at least 2 ?  do you drink in the pub or at home ? is beer a big part of your social life ?  understanding your relationship with beer, is the key to losing weight while still drinking beer.

For me the easiest way of doing it for the last  seven months has been with intermittent fasting.   I fast for no longer than 24 hours, and I still eat every day, but I have found this method the easiest way to restrict the amount of calories I consume.

I also tend to drink beers that are full of flavour, rather than just a standard pale fizzy lager. I try to savour what I drink.
