Claire Sweeneys Big Fat Diet

Claire Sweeney's Big Fat Diet

So Claire Sweeney’s Big Fat Diet pulled in 3.2 million viewers   only a 100,000 less viewers than Celebrity Big Brother, which just shows diet is still a big draw.

I didn’t watch the programme on the night it was broadcast, but have since watched it on ITV’s online catchup service  . I don’t really get what the programme was trying to prove ?. In brief, Claire , who was a very active , healthy eating woman , stops exercising and eats what she wants for six weeks. So instead of jogging to the beach, she takes the car. During the six weeks, she has a holiday with her friends, and proceeds to do what most of us do on holiday, namely enjoy a few bottles of vino, indulge in the restaurants, and munch her way through tins of pringles, with the obvious result that she needs to start moving up the dress sizes . I just don’t understand what the objective of the show was . Since my Ankle and Shoulder injuries in July I am living proof of what Claire found in 6 weeks. Do any of us really need to be shown that, during a 6 week period,  if we don’t exercise, go on Vacation, eat and drink what we want, we will gain weight ?.Yes she did put on almost 2 Stone ( 28lbs) in that 6 weeks, but she wasn’t exactly holding back, bless her, In-fact I think the dead cow with cheese in a bread bun she had from FatBurger will have done about 20lbs on its own  :) I think the only part of the documentary I felt had a value, was showing the ridiculous body image required to be in Hollywood. Even the healthy pre diet Claire would have been deemed too big for a US career, The fact the US Entertainment Industry tries to make women confirm to something that is simply unnatural , I  find quite disturbing. The programme finished with Claire going back to exercise and eating sensibly, with the not so surprising result she has since lost most the weight she gained, and was working hard on that last few stubborn pounds. Hardly a revelation  is it ?

Fasting for Weight Loss

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Intermittent Fasting is something I have had an interest in for sometime. Towards the end of last year I spent some time researching as much as I could about fasting for weight loss, and how various people were using intermittent fasting to either lose weight, or maintain their current weight using a flexible fasting plan. The appeal for me about fasting is that I don’t have to think about what I should be eating, for the simple reason I am not eating at all !. I think for many people the word fasting conjures up some strange ideas, also the fact it is associated with religious events, tends to make us think it is not something to try. All I can do is talk about my own experiences with intermittent fasting, and currently I have found it very easy to incorporate into my lifestyle. I will explain more about my own intermittent fasting routine and how I am fitting it into my own lifestyle in future posts, but I can tell you that when I do eat, I eat normally, I sit down to the same family meal as everyone else. Tonight I also finished off 2 extra meatballs that were left over. I have recorded my weight as of Jan 1st 2009 and yes I took pictures ( not pretty ! ) . I will share that information as the blog progresses.

To answer a couple of questions.

Q How Long do you fast for ?

A Approx 24hrs, from evening meal  ( 6.30 pm ) to evening meal next day.

Q Do you feel hungry while I am fasting ?

A No . I  am a little surprised but I have not had any serious hunger pangs, I do feel hungry when I start to smell the evening meal, but I always have, so nothing new there !.

Q What do you drink ?

A Black Coffee, Fruit Tea, and Water.

Q Have you felt light headed or ill ?

A No adverse affects at all, on a side issue I am not sure if it is related but strangely at the moment I am using my Inhaler ( I  am asthmatic) far less. If anyone knows of any research that shows fasting helps with Asthma , then please let me know.

Q Are there any books on the subject.

A Eat Stop Eat by Brad Pilon is available in ebook form. It provides not only a clear explanation of how Brad uses intermittent fasting, but in addition to the fasting plan, he also backs it up with reference to the various scientific studies done of the process. Brad explains things in a very clear way, I guess you could call it an idiots guide to fasting !. If you are interested in trying intermittent fasting, then his book will tell you all you need to know.

Look out for more from me on how I am using intermittent fasting for weight loss in the coming days. In the meantime if the idea of fasting to lose some weight is appealing to you, why not just do it, no need to empty the fridge of crap, and fill it with health diet foods for the latest  must do diet, just don’t eat for about 24hrs !  what have you got to lose ?

Bodyweight Workout

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Just because I have retired from dieting, does not mean I am going to sit around doing nothing for the rest of my days.. actually for the last 6 months I have indeed , done nothing. I do have a good excuse for the the first 4 months, as this was due to an ankle and shoulder injury i sustained playing tennis with my son in July. Saying that, I could have started training again in November, but I was out of the habbit, and just didn’t. Now with all the excuses out of the way I have started doing a bodyweight workout 3 times per week.  There is no need for a gym membership to get in shape, the best gym equipment out there, is the one we were born with. I will post more about bodyweight exercises and my bodyweight workout routine  in a future post.

I am a Retired Dieter

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

After all these years I have come to the obvious conclusion that diets don’t work, infact diets make you fat. So as of Jan 2009 I have decided I will not go on a diet again.

No, this does not mean I am going eat fast food and chocolate  for the rest of my life. What it does mean is I will no longer attempt to follow something that is simply not possible.  I intend to lose the obessesion with what I eat, I do not want to feel deprived, I am not going to eat pizza every day, but I don’t want to think I can’t eat pizza again without feeling guilty. I am making a lifestyle change that I feel I can stick to, not just this week, this month, but on a year on year basis.

This blog will be where I put down my thoughts and share my journey as a retired dieter.
